The Sarah E. Ray Project wrote and designed two curricula intended for high school aged students. The materials are free to use and include lesson plans, discussion guides, videos and archival materials. Please fill out the form on this page for access.

The freedom to have fun:
a lesson from the life of sarah E. Ray

In this lesson plan written by Desiree Cooper, students will learn about Sarah Ray’s story and consider what it means to be banned from fun based upon skin color. In considering whether such barriers still exist, students will learn about the power of ally-ship as a modern tool of social change.

The interactive lesson plan and accompanying discussion guide cover five different social emotional learning compentencies and include access to a short film by Aaron Schillinger.

The HOUSE THAT CHANGED LIVES:
A LESSON IN SOCAL ACTION

In this lesson plan written by Desiree Cooper and Júlia Irion Martins, students will learn about Sarah Ray’s neighborhood empowerment organization, Action House, and the lives she touched. Students will consider the different forms activism can take and investigate the meaning of self empowerment.
